Every Small Business Owner or Non-Profit Leader Needs to Answer These Questions

Where do you want to grow?

If you could wave a magic wand, what would your business or nonprofit look like at the end of this year, in 3 years, in 5 years? Do you want to expand and open new locations? Are you looking to scale back? Have donations tripled? Have some key performance indicators and target dates in mind (i.e., increase sales revenue by 3X, add two new employees by 2028, open one new location by 2030).

When you know your destination, we can map out how to get you there!

What's working and what's not?

The beginning of the year is a great time to perform an audit on your current marketing efforts. What's been performing well? What needs improvement? Could your website use some TLC? Get a baseline of where you're at currently (i.e., social media follower engagement or monthly revenue) and then see how your marketing efforts impact them over time (i.e., you gained 10% more followers after launching ads or sales spiked after an email campaign)

What does your marketing mix look like?

A lot of people think that marketing is just posting generic content about your business or products/services and praying someone sees it and makes a purchase. I call that the "Spray and Pray Method" and believe me, it doesn't work.

Strategy is required!

Who are your customers? Where do they find out about you? Do you have a good mix of digital versus traditional marketing tactics or have you placed all your eggs in one basket? J

Just like investing, you've got to diversify. Your customers don't live in a single media channel. They consume from a variety of digital and traditional channels. Plus, your messages should be different depending on the stage your customer is in (target, brand new, existing, lapsed) and who your customer is (demographics, needs, wants, likes).
